Matt Wolf

MATT WOLF was recently named one of the 25 New Faces of Independent Film by Filmmaker Magazine and he is a 2010 Guggenheim Fellow. His critically acclaimed and award-winning feature documentary Wild Combination, about the avant-garde cellist and disco producer Arthur Russell, premiered at the Berlin Film Festival and played in over 60 international film festivals, museums, and cinemas (Edinburgh, AFI Silverdocs, IFC Center, MoMA, ICA London) and was included on a number of “Top 10” lists of 2008. The film was released theatrically in the US and UK, distributed worldwide by Plexifilm, and was broadcast on the Sundance Channel.

Matt has produced and directed short documentaries for The New York Times, the series “High Line Stories” for the Sundance Channel, and he recently co-directed documentary components of NY Export: Opus Jazz, a feature length dance film in collaboration with New York City Ballet dancers and PBS Great Performances.

His upcoming documentary "Teenage" is based on a groundbreaking book by the punk author Jon Savage, an unconventional historical film about the invention of teenagers. Bringing to life fascinating youth from the early 20th century—from party-crazed Flappers and hipster Swing Kids to brainwashed Nazi Youth and frenzied Sub-Debs—the film reveals the pre-history of modern teenagers and the struggle between adults and adolescents to define youth.

5. All this stuff, by the way, could fit in my backpack. I have many, but my blue
Eastpak is my favorite.

6. My favorite single of all time, Sara, by Fleetwood Mac needs to be preserved.

7. One of my prized daguerreotype photographs of ambiguously gay men together

8. My classic, trusty Swatch, of course!

9. This one wouldn’t be so pretty in a time capsule, but if I could freeze it—a
Scuttlebutt sandwich from my favorite restaurant Saltie

10. And why not a big hard drive with all my music, photos, and masters of my

Miranda July

Miranda July is a filmmaker, artist, and writer. Her videos, performances, and web-based projects have been presented at sites such as the Museum of Modern Art, the Guggenheim Museum and in two Whitney Biennials. July wrote, directed and starred in her first feature-length film, Me and You and Everyone We Know(2005), which won a special jury prize at the Sundance Film Festival and four prizes at the Cannes Film Festival, including the Camera d’Or. Miranda July’s most recent film is The Future (2011), which she wrote and directed and stars in.

Slow and Steady Wins the Race has always addressed the issue of time by proposing ideas that balance the timely with the timeless. For our blog we asked friends, family and other people we admire to share with us what they would put in a time capsule.

Slow and Steady Wins the Race is excited to kick off another year of time capsules with creators of Unhappy Hipsters , Jenna and Molly. While we were slow on the upswing in learning about this hilariously sharp and smart site, nonetheless we felt we had to reach out. Without further ado, here is the first special guest contribution of 2012.

The Unhappy Hipster is best remembered by only the barest of necessities: choice multi-media entertainment; ostentatious pet habitats; a Swedish bike accessory; nostalgic recreations of tech gadgetry; and evidence of an orderly and highly sanitized sex-life.

Slow and Steady Wins the Race has been very fortunate over the years to work with amazing people who have gone on to do great things. In this feature we'll highlight some of the products, events, and work from people that have come through Slow and Steady Wins the Race's doors.
Genevieve Clifford started as an intern and quickly became one of our stars, handling nearly everything in our small studio. We are grateful to have had her as part of the team steering such a tight ship. She has decided to strike out on her own and will be debuting her first collection this upcoming fashion week. Car Babes FW12 is a 10 look collection debuting in February. The collection center's around digital prints based on the portrayal of the woman's body in contemporary media. Photos are used to create prints that have been manipulated into a new female body with forms that can be disturbing and confusing. The collection consists of lots of digital print and leather. A Kickstarter has been launched as a funding platform for the cost of fabric and sample making. Instead of a year in review, we thought we would share with you some of the items and ideas we would put in our time capsule. For us they straddle the very specific space of the timely with the timeless. Sometimes sublimely anachronistic, sometimes abstractly unique, but always fundamentally classic.

As we close out one year and pave the pathway for another, one thing will not change -- and that is our utmost commitment to upholding design integrity.

True design integrity is untouchable in its presence and undeniable in its cause and purpose. It is what makes our foundation.

Design has the power to be timely and timeless, unique and universal, ageless and cross-cultural.

Existing as a living archive and now best represented as a thesaurus of wearable design, Slow and Steady Wins the Race will continue to focus on the fundamentals of clothing and accessory design while making a commentary on the cultural anthropology and psychology of fashion, dress and function.

When we were told that Twitter was here to stay, the younger members of the studio took the reigns. For us the usage had to be done in an interesting way, our way, a commentary on its functionality. Sometimes we burrow a little too deep in our studio work to realize when our things make it into the outside world, let alone are captured in time. We were beyond flattered to learn that the brilliantly autodidactic Alex Prager chose our red shoes for her short film, Despair. Harry's Bar

Giuseppe Cipriani opened Harry's bar on May 13 1931 on a dead end waterway in Venice and it has not changed. The legendary place has a personality and atmosphere that is incredible enough to carve its own mark and set its own pace. It is something that cannot and does not need to be explained. It just is.

La grande allée du château de Oiron is firstly a permanent installation by Cyprien Gaillard (born in 1980 in Paris, lives and works in Berlin), part of the 'parc aux ruines' that the artist has undertaken to build throughout the world: here, he had dozens of tons of crushed rubble from a demolished tower block of Issy-les-Moulineaux dumped on the main alley of the Renaissance castle of Oiron (West of France). At the same time discrete and spectacular, the artist's intervention takes visitors to step on the ruins of modernist utopies to access a piece of heritage.
La grande allée du château de Oiron is also the title of the photography that documents this intervention, taking after Düsseldorf school of photograph's codes while pushing them to their ultimate stage: monumentality, frontality, absence of narration – it is impossible to identify the season of the year or the time of the day; but instead of picturing an arrogant modernist building, only remains a pyramid of ruins.

Two Christmas holidays ago we created a special edition music album, Pieces of Newly Fallen Snow, with all proceeds going to One Laptop Per Child featuring music by High Places, Donald Beaman, Cass McCombs, Discovery (Rostam Batmanglij and Wes Miles), Celebration, Soft Circle, Bomb Zenith & Nina Mehta, The Double, The Walkmen and Wheaton Plaza with artwork by Johanna Jackson and designed by Rob Carmichael. While this album is no longer available, there is always time to donate to world charities. Don't forget one of the original ones : UNICEF.

Slow and Steady Wins the Race was founded nine years ago as a conceptual clothing and accessory line centered on the principle that design has the opportunity to be timely and timeless, unique and universal, ageless and cross-cultural.

The foundation of the brand has always been the work itself so we are always pleasantly surprised when people are able to pull back the curtain. This is a special thanks to those great human reach-outs. Thank you for the compliments and thank you for engaging in person. The studio is constantly humming with ideas and we hope you like the next things we come up with.
